The Last Zephyr is for Sale

Zephyr #225 "Jet Stream" is for sale. As far as we can tell it's the last Zephyr that Des Townson built, so it's a bit special.

It was rebuilt in 2005 to get it ready for the 50th Zephyr nationals in 2006.

AGM 2012

The 2012 Annual General Meeting will be held at 1930hrs on Friday, July 20th, at Mt Pleasant Yacht Club, Christchurch.

This years Zephyr Nationals at Worser Bay was held in uncharacteristly (for Wellington) weather. Seven of the eight races in less than 10, (make that 5?) knots! See the results and Phil Williams report below.

Rule Changes 2010-11

As mentioned previously, the following rule change has been received by the ZOA and is now ready to be voted on.

The two most recent West Winds (December and February) contain the arguments relevant to the vote.

That rules 2.1 and 2.13 be amended to the following:

Auckland Champs 2011

2011 Auckland Zephyr Champs Report

Day 1, On the way to Manly it sounded like we might have trouble getting the races run. There was a wind warning of 20 to 30 and gusts to 50 knots in places. Thankfully once again the weather guessers were way wrong. We had a light northerly increasing at times to 15 knots. There was heaps of weed about making it fun to keep sailing while pulling up the board and clearing weed from the rudder. Sloppy seas and some good puffs provided some fun reaches and at times unstable runs. In the middle of the fleet one bad tack and you would drop 2 or 3 boats. Excellent close racing amongst a great turnout of 21 boats.

Grant, Tim and Steve all took out wins. Chris Hargreaves went quite well in Gae 22 borrowed from Bruce Hopwood. Swims by Steve after a finish, Rob Martin before a start, Peter Truscott on a reach and Tony McGlennon.

Day 2 looked promising. A nice 5 knots NNW, maybe even increasing later in the morning. Alas it was not to be. Light and fluky conditions prevailed, however we did manage to get in 3 long and frustrating races.

Congratulations to Grant Beck who easily won by 6 points. Steve Pyatt also had a good regatta second, Tim Sneddon third and Greg Salthouse 4th. Grant also won the 55+ Masters. Murray Sargisson was 5th and won the 60+ Masters, Peter Dawson had a strong regatta to finish 7th and win the Handicap prize. Chris Hargreaves 8th, Dave Blair 9th and Andy Neyle 10th.

A big thanks to Manly for holding regatta. Good racing, hot pies and cold beer.

Next Sunday will be Lake Pupuke at 1.30 pm.

2011 Rules Voting Results

Sixty-nine responses were received to the rule change proposal outlined below.

That rules 2.1 and 2.13 be amended to the following:

2.12; Minimum weight of the hull including the following fittings shall be 61kg. Included fittings: chain plates, fixed rudder fittings, cleats, hiking straps, pussy pads, buoyancy bags, blocks, mainsheet takeoff system, control lines including vang, Cunningham, traveller and forestay control lines, compass, drink bottle holder(s). This rule attracted 39 votes out of a possible 69, some 56.5% of the possible vote. It falls short of the 66.7% required under the rules to effect a change.

2.13 Hull weighing less than the minimum are to be brought up to weight with corrector weights, These may be attached anywhere in the boat, but must be readily visible. They shall not be located inside a buoyancy tank. This rule attracted 51 out of a possible 69 votes, some 74% of the vote. As this exceeds the 66.7% required under the rules, this rule is passed.

2011 Zephyr Nth Islands Report

Saturday was bright and sunny. We had 21 Zephyrs for the regatta with 9 from Auck, 5 from Wellington, 5 from Tauranga and 1 from Hamilton and 1 from Rotorua. The forecast was for light winds, so many of us dressed accordingly and were caught out when race 1 had gusts to 18 Knots from a cool Southerly.

Race 1.

Phil Williams, Grant Beck, Greg Salthouse, and Dave Blair were the front group. Grant went around the top mark bore away and broke his centre board. He managed to go ashore and borrow a Starling centreboard for Race 2 where he managed a 3rd. Phil went on to win followed by Dave and Greg. I think it was this race that Bob Smyth managed to roll out on the downwind run, right the boat only to go over again and cross the finish line upside down.

Race 2. The wind dropped to about 10 to 12 knots soon after the start. Again Phil, Greg, Grant and Rob Bryant were near the front.

Rob Bryant ( Wgtn) went on to win followed by Phil, Grant and Rob Ebert.

Race 3 was sailed in lighter shifty breezes which Greg won followed by Andy Knowles, Grant Beck ( with a borrowed Zephyr board) and Phil.

Races 4 and 5 were sailing in even patchier breezes with those going left generally punished and those going right doing well if you picked the right time to tack. Grant won race 4, followed by Andy, Phil, and Geoff from Tauranga.

Race 5. The first general recall and then 20% penalty flag. Andy managed to go over in the last minute, while not concentrating. Phil won race 5 followed by Bob Allen, Greg, and Geoff. Hansie managed to not sail thru the finish line as the course was shortened.

Racing finished about 5pm, with Phil in a very strong position for the Regatta.

Day 2 looked promising early on but it was not to be. The breeze failed to fill in and racing was cancelled.

Phil easily won the 3rd North Island Champs, followed by Greg Salthouse, Rob Ebert, Colin Maddren. Dave Blair had one of his better regattas at 5th as did Geoff Collin at 6th. Phil also won the Masters with Colin 2nd.

Overall an excellent well organised regatta, in a good location. A fun location for the family. The club facilities are great with lovely views over the lake, easy launching and a cheerful welcoming club team of volunteers. Good food on Saturday night was bonus.

It was great to see a strong team from Wellington make the 6 hour drive up.

The next regatta is the Auckland Champs 30 April 1 May at Manly.

2011 Nationals Report

National Contest Report
Akaroa 2011

Thirty-eight sailors contested this year's National Championships in Akaroa. Those that turned up a few days earlier probably had the best sailing conditions - good breezes and some sunshine, the latter particularly lacking for the event itself.

The lead up to the event had its share of drama. An elderly lady who lives on the hill above the club missed the turn at the bottom of her driveway and sailed over the cliff and into the end of Akaroa Sailing Club, narrowly missing a number of sailors, who extracted her from the vehicle and summoned Emergency Services. Had the timing been different, a number of people could have been badly injured. If this was not enough, Canterbury turned on a 5.1 earthquake, to give visitor's a taste of what the locals have become accustomed to.

Rotorua Sprint Series

Rotorua Sprint Series, October 16-17th is likely to attract interest from Tauranga Sailors. 12 races over two days. 5 boats to make a class.

2010 Auckland/North Island Champs

A great regatta for the 23 keen sailors that turned up to play. We had 3 visitors from Tauranga, 1 from Hamilton and 1 from Wellington. Manly Sailing Club again organised good courses with long beats, generally Triangle, Windward Leewards.
