OCTOBER 2020 NEWS UPDATE:
The first weekend in October 2020 heralded two important events for the Zephyr class – the launch of the Mackay Boats full GRP prototype and the resumption of regatta racing.
A fibreglass Zephyr has been talked about for decades. The vision began life as a glass/wood project in 2015 and now 64 years since the first Zephyr appeared, a full-GRP example has finally arrived. During the COVID-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown, Brian Peet used the ‘at-home’ time to build the deck plug for Mackay Boats. Company owner Owen Mackay made similar use of his Level 3 then Level 2 time to construct the six moulds, then build the first hull.
The completed boat was launched at the French Bay on the morning of the Auckland Champs. The attention to detail and quality finish is a credit to Owen’s skill. Many have sailed the prototype, and all came away impressed. Four orders are in the pipeline.
